RED Valentino Spring/Summer 2019 Collection – NYFW
It is always a pleasure to watch a Red Valentino collection walk the runway, especially when that runway is set during New York Fashion Week. TheRed Valentino spring 2019 collectionfrom this sibling label of Valentino proper was a breath of fresh ocean air this time around, taking images directly from a beachy landscape and putting them onto a series of youthful silhouettes that women of many age ranges would be able to wear.
Now-sole creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli drew inspiration from the Beach Boys, which clearly showed in the output. But of course the best part about viewing Red collections is knowing that you’re getting the Valentino name at a lower, less extravagant price.
With its mix of youth and summer scenery, this collection is so beautifully nostalgic. You can’t help but look at the clothes in this line and smile, reminiscing in warm days on the beach, and playing out in the sun. The youthful silhouettes promote that warmth as well, since by looking at the clothes (or by wearing them yourself!) you’re giving in a bit to that elevated, slightly matured childhood joy.
Crocheted knits and ombre denim showed up frequently in the line; thankfully, Piccioli knew just how to design around the fabric, expertly skirting the line between dated and fashion forward when the fabric could have easily pushed the line over the edge toward the former.
The fit of the garments wasn’t always the most flattering or practical for modern women, but the integrity of the collection lies in its ability to tell a story; that will be the biggest draw when the collection goes live for sale in the spring. Women are going to buy these looks because it makes them smile and because if anything else, they would make fantastic conversation pieces.
Many of the oversized denim pieces drag the floor, so translating that into streetwear might not be the easiest thing to pull off, but the runway appeal was fun and added to the nostalgia.
To accompany the literal beach imagery, the other fabrics in the line had a nautical theme through bold stripes and their straightforward color scheme. There was nothing abstract about the collection, which is actually a nice breather from the sometimes too-complex world of fashion month.
It’s nice to look at a collection and see the different interpretations people can come up with, but then it’s also nice every now and then to have a collection come up that everyone can experience in such a similar way. The pieces will take everyone back to their personal memories and experience with the motifs being presented, but the concept is still grounded in that it takes people to those memories; and what better way is there to get to know someone than to discuss the memories associated with a theme?
One of the most fun aspects in the Red Valentino spring/summer 2019 line is the flamingo pattern. Flamingos for summer fashion is an expected trend, but it played out so well here. You can have your flamingos on a skirt, shorts, jacket, or anything else in between; it’s a fun print for the season, and yet another aspect of the overall line that just makes you smile!
