Paper model of the tank VK 1602 «Leopard»

The paper model of the tank VK 1602 «Leopard»(fullname-GefechtsAufklä rer Versuchskraftfahrzeug 1602) - an experimental reconnaissance German tank of World War II.

Materials and tools:

  1. scissors, paper knife, drawing ruler
  2. tweezers;
  3. glue brushes and paint;
  4. watercolors (or pencils), toothpicks;
  5. clear acrylic glue ("Moment", etc.);
  6. to print the model matte photo paper with a density of 170-180 g / m2; for small parts - 70-80 g / m2.

Build Tips:

  1. Before you assemble the part, read the drawings and instructions. Determine the place of each part and imagine its assembly;
  2. Make holes in details before cutting out the part;
  3. Cut only the part (s) you need right now. Unpacked items in a box, and unused sheets in a closed folder (as an option). Throwing out trash after work, carefully inspect the scrap paper;
  4. for a better bending of the part it is necessary to hold a ruler along the bend line, pressing lightly, with the blunt side of a knife or a toothpick soTo avoid damaging the surface of the paper. Better to do it from the wrong side of the part;
  5. Keep your fingers clean and be sure to use wipes to wipe your hands, because hands may get dirty in the process;
  6. wind up cylindrical parts before gluing onto a round object of a suitable diameter, this will give them shape;
  7. Before gluing it is necessary to paint the ends of the part. White crop lines spoil the overall look of the model. To paint the ends, use watercolors or gouache paints. After selecting the desired color, apply them in a thin layer, then allow the paint to dry. About markers better to forget;
  8. Take your time with gluing. First, cut out the part, paint it from the end, wait for the paint to dry, assemble the part. Attach it to the place where it should be to make sure everything is done correctly. And only then stick. Do not forget to let the glue dry.

A bit of history

However, from April 1941 to February 1942, only 12 tanks of this type were manufactured.

In 1940, work began on an upgraded version of the VK903 with the new Maybach HL 66p engine producing 200 hp. The maximum speed reached 60 km / h, which was considered sufficient for a reconnaissance vehicle. In April 1942, MAN produced the first prototype of a VK1303 tank weighing 12.9 tons, designed to replace the VK901 / 903. In June, he was tested at the Kummersdorf proving ground together with other applicants (for example, the T-15 of Skoda) and was adopted by the German army under the designation Pz.II Ausf.L Luchs (Sd.Kfz.123). The production order amounted to 800 combat vehicles of this type.

Tank VK1602 «Leopard»promisingtobetheonlyrepresentativeofanewclassofarmoredvehicles«gefechtsaufklarer» (“military reconnaissance”), began to be developed as a replacement for the VK1303 and the further development of the experimental tank VK1601 (Pz.Kpfw II Ausf.J).In mid-1941, MAN began work on the project, obtaining a contract for the supply of 5 pre-production copies. By the end of November, blueprints were developed for building a wooden model of a future combat vehicle, and its corps received armor with rational angles and began to resemble a shortened corps of the heavy tank "Panther" designed by the same company.

At the same time with MAN, Daimler-Benz was also involved in similar developments. The project had an arrangement with rear transmission (as was the case in Soviet tanks), the tower is shifted forward. However, this option «Panther»Itwasnotclaimed,andthecompetitionfortheaverage30-tontankVK3002,heldonMay14,1942,waswonbyMAN.Workonthereconnaissanceversionofthistankalsostopped.HecontrolledpromisingdevelopmentsofWaPruf6(WaffenamtPrufwesen6/Panzer-undMotorisierungsabteilung-6thDepartmentofArmsManagement,responsibleforthedevelopmentoftanksandothermotorizedequipment).ToreducetheburdenonMANengineers,whosemaintaskwasthedevelopmentofthe“Panther”inJanuary1942,allthedrawingsofthetank“TheLeopard”weretransferredtoMIAG.Twoversionsofthereconnaissancetankweredesigned:"easy"—amassoftheorderof18tonsand«heavy»— with a mass of 26 tons. June 4, 1942, both projects were demonstrated to Adolf Hitler, and he preferred the 26-tonne, as better suited to the realities of war. On July 27, 1942, MIAG presented the drawings of FKo 252 Gefechtsaufklarer Leopard to the Department of Wa Pruf 6. It is from these drawings that it is known now what “laopard” would become? in the case of the embodiment of the machine "in the metal".

In September 1942, the Armaments Department decided to release the first serial "Leopard »inApril1943,andfromOctober1943toreachthepaceof20tanksamonth.However,theseplansdidnotcometrue,andagainbecauseoftheviewsofHitler.OnOctober13,1942,hemetwiththeReichsministerSpeer,duringwhichtheideathat“launcherreconnaissance”,whichwasdevelopedforlaosLeopard,couldwellcarryoutthetanksPanther,whichhadbeenapriority,prevailed.Therequirementsofthemilitaryhavechangedagain:thetankwassupposedtobecomemore«light»andbeabletoaccelerateto60km/h.Butthefirstcopyof"Leopard"»anddidnothavetimetoreleaseit,becauseasearlyasJanuary3,1943,thedevelopmentoftheVK1602gaveupacrossasnotmeetingtherequirementsof1943.Theconceptof"intelligencereconnaissance» had a continuation in the VK2801 project of Daimler-Benz (the machine was supposed to have a reinforced reservation and new engines), but this project also remained "on paper", and the whole program was closed in May 1944. The tower, designed for the "Leopard", served as the basis for the Sd.Kfz 234/2 Puma wheeled armored turret. Rheinmetall planned to use the Leopard chassis as the basis for a self-propelled howitzer 10.5 cm leFH, which had its own name Waffentrager Leopard, but only a wooden mockup of this combat vehicle was made.

Currently, there are several small-scale plastic models of this tank of various firms. At the heart of all these models is the VK1602 &laLeopard» drawings from the book "Panzer Tracts No.20-2 Paper Panzers", written in 2002 by American historians Thomas Jentz and Hilary Doyle. Other drawings, photographs of wooden models of the tank and the models themselves have not survived to this day.
